Timeline for the Canadian JET Programme, for Toronto 2014 departure to Tottori-ken.

Mid/Late October 2013 - Application available (created my account Oct. 17)
November 28, 2013 - Application mailed to Toronto embassy
December 3, 2013 - Confirmation email received (my application was received and is being processed)
January 22, 2014 - Notification of interview! To take place February 18 - 20.
January 30, 2014 - Notification of interview specifics.
February 20, 2014 - Interview!
March 31, 2014 - People start getting interview results! (USA was first)
April 3, 2014 - Canada results start getting sent out. Shortlisted!
May 2, 2014 - Reply form with two passport photos and copy of passport due.
May 16, 2014 - Pre-departure orientation registration due.
May 16, 2014 - Placement info released! (seems Canada was first!)
May 28, 2014 - General information session I.
June 20, 2014 - Criminal record check, certificate of health, and proof of graduation due.
June 21, 2014 - Visa application due.
June 21 - 23, 2014 - 3-day pre-departure orientation.
July 8, 2014 - TESOL workshop I.
July 10, 2014 - TESOL workshop II.
July 24, 2014 - General information session II.
August 1, 2014 - Mandatory final orientation.
August 2-3, 2014 - Departure and arrival in Japan!
August 4-5, 2014 - Tokyo Orientation
August 6, 2014 - Departure for contracting organizations/placement
August 12-13, 2014 - Tottori Prefectural Orientation in Tottori-shi

    So are the rest of the meetings not mandatory? Do you only have to attend the final orientation? I'm planning on going backpacking before leaving to Japan.

  2. Although it's beneficial to attend the other meetings, you are correct - technically ONLY the final orientation is mandatory. However, if you're planning on going abroad, be aware that it may cause problems with the visa for Japan, as you need to submit your passport to the embassy a few months before departure and don't get it back until that final orientation.
